Calistoga is the last town up the valley, tucked under Mount St. Helena, and it has a character all its own. Lincoln Avenue runs through a small downtown of spas, inns and shops built around the hot springs. Side streets hold Victorian cottages and small bungalows, and the roads out of town lead to ranch homes and larger houses on hillside lots. It's also the hottest spot in the valley in summer, with plenty of days near or above 100 degrees. Winters swing the other way. Calistoga gets more rain than Napa or American Canyon, and cold, foggy mornings are common. Paint here has to handle both extremes, and the west and south walls usually show it first. Wood that swells through a wet winter and then dries hard every summer pulls at the paint film at every joint, which is why caulk and primer matter so much here.

For homes, most of our work is exterior house painting, planned around the heat so the paint goes on at the right temperature and bonds properly. Inside, interior painting gets the same careful prep, from patching plaster in the old cottages to refreshing newer homes. Ring us for an estimate, and we'll book a visit.

Painting Through Calistoga Summers

Heat is the biggest factor in planning an outside job here. Most paints have a maximum temperature as well as a minimum, and on a 100-degree afternoon, a sunny wall can get much hotter than the air. Paint brushed onto hot siding skins over before it can flow out and grip, and the result shows visible overlap lines and a thinner coat that fails sooner. That's why, when it's hot, we start early, take the east walls in the morning and move to each side once the sun has left it. The hottest weeks of summer are often better spent on interior work, with outside painting picking back up in late spring and early fall. Dark colors on south and west walls soak up more heat and fade sooner, so we'll point that out if it applies to your color choice. Down valley in St. Helena, the heat is a little gentler, but the same rules apply.

Cottages, Inns and Homes Rebuilt After the Fires

Calistoga has a lot of small, older cottages, many with wood siding and simple trim. They're quick to paint compared with big houses, but the prep still matters, especially along the lowest boards and around windows where water sits. Spas and inns downtown need the work scheduled around guests, often a few rooms or one side of a building at a time. Buildings near the hot springs see a lot of steam and moisture inside, so bathrooms and spa rooms get paint made to resist mildew and handle humidity. The town has also lived through several fire seasons, including the 2017 Tubbs Fire, which started just north of town, and the 2020 Glass Fire. Some homes have been rebuilt since then, and their newer siding and trim often need a different primer than the old wood houses nearby. If you also own a place farther south in Napa, we handle work there too.
